One on One with Jen Rickard

Meet Jen Rickard.

Jen is the Owner/Operator of Four J Photography. Along with her team, Jen captures those iconic moments that you feel you may not need to capture. When she is not behind the camera, she loves spending time with her 2 wonderful children, amazing husband and 2 huge fur babies!

What we desire about Jen is her focus to be creative and detail-oriented. Her passion to capture light and be a light to her clients is what our mission her is all about. Let’s learn more about the remarkable Jen Rickard.

What was your initial reaction when you received confirmation to appear in our inaugural blog?

I was very excited and flattered to be asked to photograph for the new blog. I have been waiting for so long for Moncus Park to open for our city. I feel very blessed to be a part of the inaugural event at the park.

How did your photography journey begin?

My photography journey began in 2008 when I got my first camera around the birth of my first child. After practicing and self-teaching for 5 years, I decided to officially open my business in 2013. I love photographing our local high school seniors and families in our unique southern Louisiana landscapes.

Which photographers influenced you, and how did they influence your thinking, photographing, and career path?

One of the turning points in my career was attending the Jerry Ghionis lighting workshop. He is truly a remarkable photographer and teacher. Another photography giant who influenced my journey is Sue Bryce. Her posing and direction of her clients is legendary and has greatly helped my career path.

What technology/software/camera gear do you use to keep focused on what you do best, as you photograph?

I shoot primarily with my Nikon D750 and some of my favorite lenses are my Sigma Art 35mm/1.4 or my Nikon 85 mm/f1.8. My handy light reflector is also a staple of my workflow. When it comes to post processing, I love the Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop software.,

How do you get your photography to say what you want to say without using words?

I love using photography to portray a client’s emotion. I find the best way to do this is to capture the eyes. They really are the most expressive part of a person.

What do you envision when you hear “Landscape View”?

Landscape View, to me, means a wide shot of a sideways image. When I shoot a landscape shot, I prefer to keep my subject in the right or left half to bring them to the focus of the image.

What do you look forward to most capturing at Christmas in the Park ?

I can’t wait to see all the amazing decorations at the Christmas in the Park!!
