Book Club with The Book Rack of Acadiana

The Book Rack of Acadiana is leading an incredible book club at Moncus Park! Read at your own pace, then join us for a lively evening of social and discussion! This free monthly book club for all ages is led by The Book Rack of Acadiana, exploring stories of loyalty, purpose, and the natural world.

This season’s reading list:

  • June: A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World by C.A. Fletcher

    • Genre: Dystopian Fiction | Themes: Loyalty, family, survival, hope, and the bond between humans and dogs | Reading Level: 12 and up

    • A post-apocalyptic adventure tale of survival, courage, and hope. A boy named Griz lives in a world where most of humanity has become infertile, the population is dwindling, and dogs are rare. When a stranger steals his beloved dog Jess, Griz and his other dog Jip embark on a perilous journey across the ruins of the world to bring her home.

  • July: A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers

    • Genre: Cozy Science Fiction | Themes: Purpose, meaning, friendship, kindness, and the value of individual experience | Reading Level: 12 and up

    • A heartwarming and optimistic story written in an accessible style. A tea monk named Dex travels the moon of Panga providing comfort and custom tea blends, until an unexpected encounter with a robot named Splendid Speckled Mosscap leads them both on a quest to answer one simple but profound question, what do people need?

  • August: The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan

    • Genre: Nonfiction, Environment | Themes: Environmental studies, plant domestication, human history, and botany | Reading Level: Two editions available. Young Readers Edition (2024) for grades 5 to 9, Original Adult Edition (2001) for grades 10 to 12 and up

    • Journalist Michael Pollan explores the fascinating relationship between humans and four plants, apples, tulips, marijuana, and potatoes, arguing that plants have co-evolved with us by satisfying our deepest desires. In doing so, they have shaped human culture and history, prompting the question of who is truly domesticating whom. Please note that this selection includes discussion of marijuana.
